Trends/inspiration - Outside In

There are a number of ways to incorporate nature into your home in both traditional and modern styles. With an abundance of nature-inspired prints available it's possible to find the right colouring and texture to suit any living space. A few general tips:

  • Select a print with a scale to match the room. Small, delicate prints work well in smaller rooms, while larger rooms can do a larger, bolder print justice.
  • At natural look can be achieved without the use of prints. Textured wallcoverings made natural fibres have a wonderful tactility which will soften a contemporary interior.
  • Almost all wallcoverings are available in a number of colourways with co-ordinating fabrics. Try mixing and matching colourways or prints with soft furnishings to liven up the look.

English Country

Products shown: Avignon wallpaper (Chanticleer), Serenity wall mural, Garden Trellis wallpaper (Parasol).

Capture the beauty of an English country garden with light floral prints or a picturesque wall mural. Mixing and matching different colourways or complimentary prints will create a homely atmosphere.

Contemporary Chintz

Products shown: Sutton Stria wallpaper (Stripes), Sheridan Rose wallpaper (Sheridan Road), Tahalia wallpaper (Stripes).

Like many retro styles, large floral prints, can be reclaimed and used to create cool, modern living spaces. Get the look by using the floral print on a feature wall alongside crisp stripes or brightly coloured painted walls.

Garden

Products shown: Chanticleer wallpaper (Chanticleer), Regular Rushcloth wallcovering (Southgate Vol. 5), Grasshopper wallpaper (Parasol).

If you have a living room or conservatory which opens out into the garden you can increase the sense of space and light by bringing the two together. Pretty prints on light backgrounds work well especially when combined with natural textures such as grasscloth wallcoverings.

Art

Products shown: Bamboo wall mural, Birches wall mural, Pebbles wall mural.

Nature doesn't have to be delicate and detailed. The close-up photography of these wall murals is contemporary and abstract. With these murals it is best to keep the neighbouring walls plain, but instead of neutral colours you could try vibrant blues or fuschias.

Woodland

Products shown: Chickadee wallpaper (Retreat), Morning Forest wall mural, Nature's Grass wallpaper (Stripes).

Incorporating a woodland feel results in a soft look that translates well across the seasons. Soft furnishings, table arrangements and lighting can transform this from a cool, summery one into a cosy, wintery one.

Stripes

Products shown: Bamboozled wallpaper (Retreat), RW Rushcloth wallcovering (Classic Oriental III), Beach Hut wallpaper (Sheridan Road).

A subtle nod can be given to nature by using texture without needing more obvious prints and colours. Most nature-inspired prints are vertical so horizontal prints make an interesting change. Grasscloth wallcoverings can bring beautiful, tactile surfaces into your home.

Great Outdoors

Products shown: Lake in the Woods wall mural, Oriental Garden wall mural, Field Greens wallpaper (Mah-Jong).

A big impact can be created with large leafy or floral prints, or a scenic wall mural of a dramatic landscape. Landscapes with lakes and waterfalls work particularly well in bathrooms and the effect can be finished with dark stone (or stone-effect) flooring.
