Trends/inspiration - Children

A child's bedroom should be bright and cheerful while adapting to the child's changing tastes and age. A few general tips:

  • instead of using all-over children's wallpapers or borders (which can look lost at the top of the room) a good cost-effective alternative is a wall mural which can be more easily replaced when your child is older.
  • wallpaper gives a room more warmth than paint and, providing a good quality vinyl paper is used, will be resiliant to scrapes and dirt. If on a budget then just paper the focal wall and use a complementary coloured paint on the remaining walls.
  • using bright prints from 'adult' collections can still be child-friendly but will stand the test of time and will even allow quick conversion to a guest room if your child moves to a larger room when they are older, or heads of to university.

Island Away

Products shown: Pirates wall mural, Ocean Breeze wall mural, Oahu Surfer wall mural.

Tropical island murals instantly conjure up thoughts of life elsewhere, their bright, vibrant blue are the ideal colour for rooms without much natural light and also for adding colour without too much warmth in rooms with a lot of sunlight.

Explorer

Products shown: Yachting Days (Sarong), World Map wall mural, Solar System wall mural.

Capture a taste of adventure with a wordly design. These popular map and space murals encourage learning in younger children and will still look great when covered in a teenager's rock posters.

Tropical paradise

Products shown: Nature's Harmony wall mural, Wonders of the Sea wall mural, Cockatoo Eos (Mah-Jong).

Bold, bright designs work well in children's rooms and younger children love the variety and details of bigger prints. These designs are ideal on a focal wall, or placed across the joint of two walls to great a play corner.

Nursery

Products shown: Sutton Stria (Stripes), Small Safari wall mural, Sutton Stria (Stripes).

Small Safari is a cute new mural featured animals with stitched-style outlines, perfect for a nursery and younger children who will learn to recognise and name the breeds of animals. Here it is paired with simple stripe wallpapers which will suit an older child in years to come with only the mural needed to be replaced. With a palette of pastel colours it will co-ordinate well with most children's furniture and soft furnishings.

Princess

Products shown: Frutta Di Mare (Damasks), Princess Canopy wall mural, Look Before You Leap wallpaper (Chanticleer).

Princess Canopy is designed to be placed at the head of a bed to turn a bedroom into a palace. It can be paired with an elaborate damask to create a sumptious eastern palace, or a more traditional pastel print for a fairytale effect.

Sophisticated Lady

Products shown: Aviary (Sarong), Hayley's Harlequin (Sheridan Road), 5th Avenue (Sarong).

As toys are replaced with make-up and clothes, feminine prints will make the older girl's bedroom into a warm living environment. Larger and more detailed prints work well as a feature wall, leaving other walls painted or wallpapered in neutral colours. A large pinboard (which can be painted in a co-ordinating colour) is a good way to dress up a plain wall and keep posters, magazine cuttings and artwork tidy and 'contained'.

Wild Child

Products shown: Wild Thing (Parasol), Banker's Stripe (Sarong), Wild Horses wall mural.

Bold prints and attention-grabbing wall murals will bring life and character to a room. Teaming them with cool, zestful prints will balance the room and prevent them from becoming overbearing.
