How to use wood repair products
PC-Products Wood Repair and Restoration products - PC-Petrifier, PC-Rot Terminator, PC-Woody
PC-Petrifier - directions for use:
Area to be treated must be dry, free of dirt, dust and grease. Remove loose paint varnish or flaky wood. Generously apply PC-Petrifier by pouring, spraying, brushing or sponging onto area to be restored. Repeatedly saturate the rotted wood fibres to enable the deepest possible penetration. Let cure until solid and not tacky to the touch.
PC-Petrifier - application tips:
Since the depth of penetration may depend on the porosity of the wood, to get deeper penetration drill or poke small holes to allow access down to solid wood. On painted surfaces drill small holes (1/8 inch or larger) to allow access to soft wood. When restoring a vertical surface; drill holes in a downward angle and then saturate with PC-Petrifier. If needed, apply more PC-Petrifier to affected area. Normally one treatment will be sufficient. After area is restored, fill holes and missing wood with PC-Woody epoxy. Best results are obtained when applying at temperatures above 45°F to dry wood. Successful application depends on the wood’s dryness, porosity and preparation.
PC-Rot Terminator - directions for use:
Wood Hardening: Worn and weathered wood can be rejuvenated with PC-Rot Terminator. The surface can be made harder and less crumbly. A desk surface or hardwood floors can be made harder and wear resistant if the wood is ready to accept the epoxy consolidate. Seal the wood from the effect of wear and weather.
Adhesive: PC-Rot Terminator can be used as an adhesive on non-porous surfaces. The mixture becomes thicker after 90 minutes of working time allowing for higher build and increased glue lines.
Penetration: PC-Rot Terminator will readily follow the grain of rotted wood. Removal of paint and varnish will increase the acceptance of the consolidant. For maximum penetration poke or drill holes into the wood or expose the grain of the wood by cutting into the wood. For vertical surfaces drill holes on an angle to hold PC-Rot Terminator. Reapply the PC-Rot Terminator prior to cure if needed.
Applicators: The epoxy consolidant can be applied using and acid or paint brush or a paint roller until the area is fully saturated. The applicator bottle can be used to inject into drilled holes or larger openings in the wood. Do not attempt to spray outside of a paint spray booth.
Painting: Stain sealing primer or oil based primer are recommended.
Cure rate: The cure rate in the thicker sections is faster than in the thin sections. The greater the temperature, the faster the cure time. PC-Rot Terminator cure can be accelerated using a light bulb or other gentle heat source. The cure rate is halved for every 20°F increase. After cure (roughly 24 hours) fill in missing pieces with PC Woody paste epoxy.
Coverage: One unit of 24 ounces will seal 50 to 100 square feet of deck as a sealer. For severely rotted wood, one unit will treat 500 to 2500 cubic inches. The amount of usage depends on the porosity of wood. Damp wood that is heavy with water will not accept the maximum amount of the mixture. PC-Rot Terminator can not displace water in wood.
PC-Woody - directions for use:
Using separate knives to remove amount needed, mix equal parts A (off white) and B (light brown) on a flat clean surface until a uniform color is achieved. Surfaces to be bonded must be free of dirt, oil, rust, etc. For best results, rough up the surface PC-Woody will be bonding to. Normally, no vice or clamp is needed. Prop or tape heavy objects to a wall or ceiling.
Apply PC-Woody in any thickness to both sides of surface and bring together firmly. Be careful to insure that ample amount of PC-Woody remains between the contact surfaces. Use screen wire or fibreglass cloth to reinforce large voids and gaps.
PC-Woody - mixing tips:
In cold or cool temperatures, place PC-Woody containers near heat prior to using. PC-Woody mixes and spreads easier at 80°F than at 40°F. Any clean smooth flat surface is an excellent surface for mixing and working. A small putty knife or flexible artist spatula are great tools for mixing and applying PC-Woody. Denatured alcohol is excellent for smoothing applied PC-Woody. Also use Denatured alcohol to clean surfaces before applying.
Note: Most epoxies are temperature sensitive and will cure faster at higher temperatures and slower at cooler temperatures. Speed cure with artificial heat.
PC-Woody - after cure:
You can paint, stain, drill, machine, sand, file, tap, or saw.
PC-Woody - tinting:
Measure equal amounts of part A (off white) and part B (light brown). Mix the pigment into part A (white) until preferred color is achieved. Exact color matching is difficult and may require assorted pigment colors. Combine part A with part B when the desired color is reached.
Pigments come in three forms: powder, paste, and liquid. Powder pigments are by far the pigment type of choice. Powder pigment is preferred because less is needed to reach desired color. Paste pigments are an option if powders are not available. With paste pigments bold colors may not be achieved. Do not exceed more than 5% volume of combined A (off white) and B (light brown). More than 5% will affect the integrity of the chemical properties of PC-Woody and is not recommended. Liquid pigments are not recommended (for example – food dye).
PC-Woody staining:
PC-Woody can be stained, but the type of stain will affect the color of the PC-Woody. The best stains contain pigments. The stain contains pigments if the can has sediment at the bottom of the can. This sediment must be stirred before using the stain. Pigmented stains have more hiding power than other stains. Other stains sometimes contain only dyes. Advice: PC-Woody cures to a light tan color. It does not have the various shading found in real wood. PC-Woody is capable of absorbing some stain but it is not as porous as real wood. By staining PC-Woody, the result is usually a light shade of the stain used.
Before using PC Woody, it is very important to test the final color against the item you're repairing by preparing a small sample and letting it cure. Then, stain the sample. If the stained PC Woody does not produce the desired result, consider pre-tinting the PC Woody with pigment tinting pastes or raw pigment powders.
After PC-Woody has cured, sand by hand with coarse sandpaper (100 -120 grit), sanding with the grain of the wood. Add grain to the repair with staining markers or artists paint brush.
